Marble in Geneva

Bringing back the depth, veining and shine of Geneva’s marble

From the Old Town to the Quai du Mont-Blanc, Geneva has always had a taste for fine stone. The entrance halls of the buildings along the old fortification ring, the balustraded staircases of the townhouses on Rue des Granges, the bathrooms of Cologny’s lakeside villas and the counters of the watch houses on Rue du Rhône all share the same material: marble, laid to last for generations as long as it is properly cared for.

Les Traitements du Sud · Geneva brings the craftsmanship of the Les Traitements du Sud company to these interiors: polishing, crystallization, grinding, repair, stain removal, sealing and maintenance of marble. One specialist team, one single contact from the first visit to the final handover, and a free quote prepared on site once your stone has been identified.

We work the way a restorer does: understand the stone before touching it, choose abrasives and products according to its composition, work without dust or splashes in occupied premises, and deliver a finish that suits the spirit of the building, from the soft matte of a historic vestibule to the mirror polish of a contemporary hotel lobby.

Seven skills for every condition of marble

Every job starts with an assessment of the stone: type of marble, surface condition, previous treatments and how the space is used. That assessment decides the right combination of techniques.

Marble repairRestoration

Chips, cracks and broken stair nosings: colour-matched filling and a polish blended to the original.

Stain removalStains

Stain removal

Etch marks, rust, oil, water rings and limescale: each stain has its own method and poultice.

Sealing & protectionPrevention

Sealing & protection

Penetrating water and oil repellents so the marble copes with daily life without changing its look.

Marble maintenanceLong term

Marble maintenance

Maintenance contracts for property managers, hotels, banks and boutiques, scheduled around footfall.

A living material

Why marble in Geneva loses its shine

Marble is a calcareous stone: its surface reacts to acids and wears under foot traffic. In Geneva, three factors come up on almost every job. Winter first, when de-icing salt and grit carried in on shoes scratch entrance halls and dull the first steps of the staircase. Water next, fairly hard, which leaves whitish films around taps and on shower trays. And finally cleaning: an aggressive detergent, the wrong wax or a splash of vinegar is enough to etch the surface.

The good news is that dull marble is almost never lost. Removing the damaged layer, a few microns or a few tenths of a millimetre depending on the case, reveals sound stone again, with its original colours and veining.

The marbles we restore most often

Italian whites, Spanish blacks, rarer greens and reds: every marble has its own hardness, sensitivity to acids and way of taking a polish. Identifying it means choosing the right method from the start.

Before and after

A difference you can see, and that lasts

Drag the slider below: same top, same light, before and after a crystallization carried out by Les Traitements du Sud. The haze and glass rings are gone, the veining stands out and the reflection is crisp.

On a lobby floor or a staircase, the principle is the same on a larger scale. And to make the result last, we always finish with suitable protection and written care instructions, handed to whoever will clean the surface day to day.

Our method

Five steps, no surprises

The process is the same for a table top and for a 300 m² lobby. It tells you in advance what will be done, how long it will take and what finish to expect. See the method in detail.

    Visit and free quote

We identify the marble, measure the surfaces, note access and timing constraints, then give you a detailed quote in Swiss francs.

  2. 2

    Test on a sample area

On request, a test of a few square decimetres lets you approve the finish with your property manager or designer.

  3. 3

    Grinding and polishing

Wet work, dust-free, with walls, woodwork and furniture protected. Walkways stay accessible.

  4. 4

    Protection

A water or oil repellent suited to the use, which penetrates the stone without leaving a surface film.

  5. 5

    Aftercare advice

You receive a simple sheet: products to use, things to avoid and how often to plan a light buffing.

FAQ

The questions we hear most often

How much does marble restoration cost in Geneva?

The price depends on the area, the condition of the stone and the finish you want: a light buffing is a very different job from full grinding followed by polishing. That is why we come to you for a free quote in Swiss francs, once we have seen and identified your marble.

Do we need to move out during the work?

No, in the vast majority of cases. We work wet, without dust, and zone by zone. In a residential building people keep using the entrance; in a hotel or boutique we can work overnight or outside opening hours.

Polishing or crystallization: which should I choose?

Mechanical polishing suits every marble and gives a very natural look. Crystallization hardens the surface of calcite marbles and holds up very well in busy areas. We advise you after testing the stone, and a sample area lets you compare.

How long does a job take?

A countertop or fireplace takes a day. An apartment floor usually takes two to four days, a building lobby a little longer depending on size and permitted hours. The exact schedule is set out in the quote.

Do you also work in the canton of Vaud?

Yes, across Terre Sainte and up to Nyon: Coppet, Founex, Commugny, Mies and neighbouring towns. For addresses further afield, give us a call and we will look at your request.

Can we deal with you in English?

Yes. The website is available in French and English, and you can write to us in either language. Many international owners, family offices and hotels find this convenient.
