Cleaning, stain removal and re-polishing of carved fireplaces, with chips filled to match the stone.

Mansion fireplaces, paved entrance halls and historic staircases: we restore the hill’s marble with the care its heritage deserves.
On the hill surrounding St Peter’s Cathedral, the Old Town holds a precious share of Geneva’s architectural heritage: old houses reworked many times over, eighteenth-century mansions lining the Rue des Granges, buildings on the Grand-Rue where art galleries and antique dealers follow one another, and apartments clustered around the Place du Bourg-de-Four. Behind these stone façades, marble often plays a ceremonial role: carved fireplaces in the drawing rooms, chequerboard floors in the entrance halls, chest and console tops, and sometimes a more recently refitted bathroom in pale marble.
Les Traitements du Sud · Geneva approaches these interiors with a restorer’s eye. Every piece is assessed before it is treated, with one clear aim: to restore the marble’s original character — its veining, its depth, its polish — without erasing the patina that gives an old residence its charm. An entrance-hall floor walked on for generations is not handled like the floor of a new apartment: grinding is kept to a measured minimum, the level of shine is chosen to suit the period, and the stone is protected without being sealed in.
In the district we work for private owners, for the property managers and condominium associations (PPE) that run the buildings, for the galleries and shops on the Grand-Rue and for the practices based on the principal floors. All our services — polishing, crystallization, repair, stain removal and sealing — are carried out with compact equipment designed for narrow stairwells and small rooms.

Apartments on the Rue des Granges and the surrounding streets frequently retain their original fireplace: white marble for the most classical models, grey-veined marbles or colourful breccias for others. Over the decades the surround dulls, the mantel shelf is ringed by vases and candles, and soot greys the areas closest to the hearth.
We begin by cleaning with pH-neutral products, treat the rings with a poultice, then restore the polish by hand on the mouldings, where a machine has no place. Chips along the edges are filled with a resin tinted to match the stone, recreating an unbroken line. The result respects both the carving and the age of the piece; see our marble fireplace page for more detail.
We come to see the marble on site, identify the stone, its condition and past treatments, then provide a free, itemised quote in Swiss francs.
Cobbled streets, restricted traffic, floors without a lift: we plan the equipment delivery, the unloading slot and carrying with you or your property manager.
Old parquet, panelling, drapes and nearby furniture are protected before any work begins; the stairwell is marked off when the project involves common areas.
Cleaning, stain removal, wet grinding where needed, progressive polishing and buffing: each pass is checked under raking light to keep the surface even.
A suitable impregnating sealer completes the job, and we leave you simple care advice tailored to the stone and to how the room is really used.

Many Old Town buildings open onto a paved entrance hall, often in black-and-white chequerboard, leading to a staircase whose treads have been worn smooth by footsteps. In winter, shoes carry de-icing salt and grit in from the cobbles: salt leaves whitish bloom, while grit scratches the surface and wears hollows into the walkways.
For these common areas we offer a measured re-levelling, followed by a satin or high-gloss polish as the PPE prefers, then a protective treatment that makes routine cleaning easier. Worn steps are worked one by one, nosings included. For a whole building, the project can be phased so that residents always have a usable route. See also our page on marble staircases.
Working on the hill means dealing with a dense, historic urban fabric. The lanes around the cathedral and the Bourg-de-Four are ill-suited to parking a van, so we favour lightweight equipment that can be carried by hand, and use nearby public car parks, such as Saint-Antoine, to keep congestion down. Deliveries are grouped at the start of the day.
Our machines are chosen to fit up a winding staircase and into a room of just a few square metres. They break down into portable units, which avoids any rubbing against walls and banisters.
Galleries, offices and homes sit side by side. We schedule the noisier phases with the property manager or the occupants and work wet to contain dust, which also protects works of art displayed nearby.
In historic buildings we coordinate our work with the architect or the client and favour reversible, breathable products that respect the period materials surrounding the marble.
Chest tops, gueridons and antique consoles are treated on site or in an adjoining room, with no unnecessary transport. The polish is matched to the style of the piece, from a discreet satin to a mirror shine.

ClientsA marble partner for your renovation projects in Geneva’s historic buildings.
Yes. Our equipment is selected to be carried by hand and breaks down into light units. We take the machines up the stairs, protecting banisters and walls, and can then work in even the smallest rooms. The upper floors of buildings on the Grand-Rue or the Rue des Granges pose no particular difficulty; we simply allow time for carrying in the schedule.
We organise the project in advance: a short unloading slot at the start of the day, parking in a nearby public car park, then carrying the equipment to the building. If your property manager has a permit or a delivery space, we are happy to use it. The equipment then stays in the apartment or a room provided, keeping the street clear.
Often, yes. An old entrance-hall floor tells the story of the house; returning it to an as-new state can strip it of its character. We usually suggest a deep clean, localised work on scratches and a satin polish that revives the colours while keeping the softness of the wear. The finish is agreed with you on a test area.
In the vast majority of cases, yes. The fireplace is treated in place: the floor and hearth are protected, then we clean, apply poultices to stains, fill chips and hand-polish the mouldings. Dismantling is only considered if a piece has come loose or is deeply cracked, and always after discussing it with you.
Yes. Thresholds, shop floors, plinths and marble display tops are part of our everyday work. We work outside opening hours, early in the morning or on a closing day, so the gallery remains open to its clients and the works are protected throughout.
Yes, the visit and the quote are free and without obligation. We prepare a detailed proposal in Swiss francs describing the work planned for each surface. You can submit it to your property manager or your PPE meeting before deciding. To request one, use our contact page.
