Marble in the country houses of the Right Bank

Genthod is a small Geneva municipality on the right bank of Lake Geneva, between Bellevue and Versoix. Its land slopes gently from open fields down to the water, as far as the hamlet of Creux-de-Genthod and its little harbour. It is a quiet, residential village, set apart from the bustle of the city yet only minutes from Geneva via the Route de Lausanne or the Genthod-Bellevue railway station.

That character carries through to the interiors. Part of Genthod’s housing stock consists of country houses built by Genevan families in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often altered since, with flagged floors, carved fireplaces and stone staircases. The naturalist Charles Bonnet spent much of his life here, which says a great deal about the place’s long-standing vocation: a cultivated countryside by the water.

Alongside these houses stand contemporary villas facing the lake and a few more recent small condominium (PPE) buildings. Their marble is quite different: polished Carrara in bathrooms, large pale tiles in living rooms, stone worktops in open-plan kitchens. Les Traitements du Sud · Geneva works in all of these interiors, providing polishing, crystallization, repair and protection for marble.

Period fireplaces, flagstones and staircases

In a Genthod manor house, the marble is often more than a century old. A drawing-room fireplace has seen generations of winter fires: the mantel shelf is marked by glasses and candlesticks, the hearth blackened, the mouldings clogged with grime. A chequerboard hall floor has worn down along the daily path between the front door and the staircase.

On pieces like these we work with restraint. We clean thoroughly, fill chips with a resin tinted to match the stone, grind only where the surface truly needs it and choose a finish in keeping with the period: a soft satin rather than a mirror gloss. The aim is for the stone to regain its lustre without losing its patina. See also our marble fireplace page.

Property types

Three kinds of interior in Genthod

Needs vary a great deal from one address to the next. Before quoting, we look at the stone, its age and the way the room is lived in.

01

Country houses

Old flagstones, fireplaces and worn steps. The priority is cleaning, discreet repairs and a finish that respects the age of the stone. Grinding is kept to a minimum so as not to soften the original edges and relief.

02

Lakeside villas

Large pale floors opening onto the garden, white marble bathrooms, kitchen worktops. Here it is scratches from sand carried in from outside, citrus stains and limescale that dull the stone.

03

Small modern PPE buildings

Entrance halls and landings in polished marble, often run by a property manager. Regular maintenance, scheduled with the building manager, keeps the common areas immaculate with minimal effort.

Method

How a project runs in Genthod

  1. 1

    First contact

You describe the surface and, if possible, send a few photos. We arrange a visit at a time that suits you, on a weekday or in the early evening.

  2. 2

    Visit and free quote

On site we identify the marble, test how it reacts and take measurements. The free quote in Swiss francs sets out every stage.

  3. 3

    Protecting the surroundings

Skirting, joinery, rugs and furniture are covered. In an older house, adjoining parquet floors receive particular care.

  4. 4

    Treating the stone

Wet grinding where needed, repairs, then polishing or crystallization depending on the marble and how the room is used.

  5. 5

    Protection and advice

A suitable water- and oil-repellent sealer is applied, followed by simple care advice for everyday life.

Lake-view bathrooms and kitchens

Geneva’s mains water is fairly hard. In a marble bathroom this shows up as white rings around the taps and a dull film in the shower. Many owners then reach for a shop-bought descaler; being acidic, it etches the surface and leaves permanently dull patches you can feel with your fingertips.

We put this damage right with spot or full polishing, then protect the stone so that it can afterwards be cleaned with plain water and a neutral soap. The same approach applies to worktops: lemon, vinegar or wine leave marks that we remove before treating the surface. More details on our marble bathroom and marble worktop pages.

Access and planning

Working in Genthod

Genthod is easy to reach from Geneva along the Route de Lausanne, which follows the right bank. In the narrower lanes leading down to Creux-de-Genthod, we adapt the size of our vehicle and agree a parking spot with you in advance, so as not to inconvenience the neighbours or block access to the harbour.

Our machines work wet and raise no dust, so the house stays habitable throughout. We progress room by room and can schedule the work while you are away, in coordination with your house manager or property manager if you wish. For homes that entertain a lot in summer, we recommend planning the work for spring or autumn.

Genthod lies at the heart of our northern sector: we cover it on the same rounds as Bellevue, Versoix and the city’s Right Bank, which makes regular maintenance straightforward to arrange.

FAQ

Marble restoration in Genthod: your questions

Do you work in Genthod’s period houses?

Yes, it is in fact a large part of our work on the right bank. In a country house we favour cleaning, discreet repairs and a satin finish that respects the age of the stone. We protect joinery and parquet before starting, and we show you a test on a small area before treating the whole surface.

Can your machines reach the hamlet of Creux-de-Genthod?

Yes. Our polishing machines are compact and travel in a reasonably sized van. We agree in advance where to park near the house. If access is genuinely tight, we carry the equipment in by hand: it makes no difference to the quality of the work.

Can you bring a fireplace back to life without making it too glossy?

Yes. The level of shine is controlled through the choice of abrasives and finish. On a period fireplace we often aim for a luminous satin, closer to the original look than a mirror polish. We also clean the hearth and mouldings and repair chips on the mantel shelf with a tinted filler.

What should I do about limescale in my marble shower?

Avoid acidic descalers, which attack marble. We remove the film and rings by polishing, then apply a protective treatment that reduces limescale build-up. After that, a squeegee after each shower and a neutral soap are enough to keep the surface clean day to day.

How long does a project in a villa take?

A fireplace or worktop is done in a day. A living-room floor usually takes two to four days depending on its size and the condition of the stone. We set out the schedule in the quote and can work while you are away if you prefer.

Is the quote free for an address in Genthod?

Yes. Genthod is part of our regular area and we do not charge for travelling out to quote. After the visit you receive an itemised quote in Swiss francs, which you are entirely free to accept or decline.
